W. Gray Medlin
Co-founder and Managing Director

Gray Medlin founded The Carson Medlin Company in 1991 and manages the firm’s North Carolina office. Immediately prior to founding The Carson Medlin Company, Mr. Medlin was vice president of corporate finance for a regional investment banking firm.  There he provided community banks with valuation-­related services, including mergers and acquisitions and financial fairness opinions. He began his corporate finance career handling corporate restructurings and private financings for a European­-owned manufacturer. Mr. Medlin earned a B.S. degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Paula S. Johannsen
Managing Director

Paula Johannsen joined Carson Medlin in 1993 and manages the firm’s Florida office. Immediately prior to joining the firm, Ms. Johannsen was a senior appraiser for a business valuation firm, appraising closely-­held businesses. Ms. Johannsen began her career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta as a commercial bank examiner. She continued her work with financial institutions as an equity analyst covering banking for a regional investment banking firm. Ms. Johannsen is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she received a B.S. degree in business administration.  She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has been designated an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in business valuations by the American Society of Appraisers.

 

Daniel T. Bass
Managing Director

Dan Bass joined Carson Medlin in 2006 and manages the firm’s Texas office.  He most recently was Senior Vice President in charge of mergers and acquisitions for Compass Bancshares, Inc., a $30 billion regional bank holding company headquartered in Birmingham, AL.  While at Compass, Mr. Bass participated in over 30 transactions with financial institutions and financial services companies across the nation.  Prior to joining Compass, Mr. Bass was a senior manager of financial services at KPMG; an investment banking associate at Sheshunoff & Co.; and a senior financial analyst at the FDIC in Washington DC.  Mr. Bass is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and received an M.S. in Information Management at Marymount University.  He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has been designated an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in business valuations by the American Society of Appraisers.  Mr. Bass is a past lecturer at the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at SMU and is a frequent speaker on acquisition topics at executive management seminars.

Jeffrey E. Adams
Managing Director

Jeff Adams joined Carson Medlin in 2008 and manages the firm’s new Atlanta office.  Mr. Adams was most recently a Director of Investment Banking in the Atlanta office of Stanford Group Company, a national firm with interests in financial services and wealth management.  At Stanford, Mr. Adams concentrated on business development and executing transactions for financial institutions.  Prior to Stanford Group, Mr. Adams was Vice President of investment banking in the Atlanta office of Trident Securities and Vice President and City Executive for the State Employees Credit Union in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Mr. Adams is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Masters of Business Administration at East Carolina University.

Steven E. Huntington
Vice President

Steve Huntington joined Carson Medlin in 2000 and works in corporate finance in the firm’s North Carolina office. Mr. Huntington earned a B.S. in Business degree from Wake Forest University.  While at Wake Forest he was awarded several merit-­based business scholarships and participated in a summer program in West Africa studying the development of and economic issues facing underdeveloped countries. He has also served as a director on the founding board of directors for an economic development-related nonprofit foundation.

Daniel J. Flaherty
Associate

Dan Flaherty joined Carson Medlin in 2005 and works in corporate finance in the firm’s Florida office.  Mr. Flaherty earned a B.A. in economics from Tufts University and a MBA from The University of Tampa.  He is licensed with FINRA as a registered representative and a general securities principal.

Paul J. Stephens
Associate

Paul Stephens joined Carson Medlin in 2006 and works in corporate finance in the firm’s Texas office.  Previously, Mr. Stephens worked with a private trading firm on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade.  He also worked with Peel Ventures, where he assisted in analyzing the acquisition of international properties.  Mr. Stephens earned a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ryan C. Poole
Associate

Ryan Poole joined Carson Medlin in 2008 and works in corporate finance in the firm’s Texas office.  Mr. Poole earned a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin.  He interned with E&G Advisors, where he analyzed the asset allocation of client portfolios.  Additionally, he assisted in the evaluation of real estate investments.
